On Day 195 of my challenge to continuously immerse myself in all that is Brazilian, I took in a Brazilian movie from 1980 – Bye Bye Brazil.
If you are one of those people who at one point in time believed that Brazil was all beach and jungle (like me), this movie will enlighten your geographical knowledge. A small carnival moves through small towns in the north of Brazil. They pick up a young accordionist and his pregnant wife who want to see more of the world (well, the accordionist does, as well as more of the dancer of the troop who is the girlfriend of the ring leader).
The movie is bizarre in a campy kind of way. It was nominated at Cannes for the Palme d’Or in 1980. Most interesting to me were the various businesses that involved bringing entertainment to the people that often didn’t have electricity and how the introduction of the television made them obsolete.
Bye Bye Brazil is available on Netflix for those that want to catch it.
