Day 129: Mônica

Sorry, I’m a bit behind in writing, so you’ll probably get two or three of my daily efforts today.

On Day 129, my daughter and I were exposed to something very Brazilian… Turma da Monica.

Turma da Monica is a comic series created by Mauricio de Sousa.

Monica is the star of the series and kids are always trying to steal her toy rabbit. She and her little paulistano friends have adventures in their neighborhood fictional Sao Paulo neighborhood. Mônica, Cebolinha, Cascão and Magalí and the four main characters and there are a number of other cartoon kids that enter the stories.

While the series has been compared with Charles M. Schultz’s Peanuts cartoons, I think it is much less cerebral and would liken it more to a combination of a younger version of Archie’s Gang and Little Lulu.

Not only did we get to enjoy a comic book, but her father also rented her a Turma da Monica video (which she has now watched probably 10 times).

I find it funny how suddenly into Mônica she is. It shows how Brazilian SHE is becoming.

I stumbled onto your blog two weeks ago. I am a 51 year old American man who lived overseas for 4 years and want to expat again. I have been looking at Brazil for over a year as a destination, and found your blog and to be awesomely helpful and a delight to read.

There are soooooo many blogs that are rambling nonsense with no flavor or depth. Yours shines on all counts!

What do you think?
