“I am a child who sees love through a keyhole. That’s all I’ve ever been. I was born a child, and am bound to die a child, and the keyhole is my lens as a writer. I am, and have always been, a pornographic angel.”
– Nelson Rodrigues
The title “Pornographic Angel” refers to a collection of short stories written by Brazilian playwright, novelist and journalist Nelson Rodrigues, that inspired a stage show.
Nelson began a career in journalism at the age of 13 when his father started a newspaper. He was a crime reporter in Rio de Janeiro. His police beat investigations, as well as personal tragedy, inspired much of his writing. His work is not for the frail at heart, and the mildest of criticism has accused him of being controversial. However, “pervert” was also thrown around a bit.
We saw the stage play “Pornographic Angel” while in New York. But I had yet to dive into the actual short stories that the play was based on until day 115. (Ok, I have a copy in English, I’ll admit it.) I can definitely say that you will see the less pleasant side of Brazilian cultural within these stories.
Definitely worth a dive if your willing to go to the dark side.
